Its whats going on with tattooing in Melbourne

Tattoo school for tattoo courses

Set of tattoo guns in case

The Australian Tattoo Academy is Australia’s only tattooing school and fortunately for us it is located in Mornington, however if you live in another state of Australia they also run courses in Brisbane, Sydney and Hobart.  If your good at drawing and are interested in getting into the tattooing industry then you should definitely check it out.  However it is important to remember that if you can’t draw it with a pencil, chances are you’re not going to be able to tattoo it.  So if like me you are fairly uncoordinated when it comes to putting pen to paper then perhaps its best to just stay on the receiving end of the needle.

The academy runs 10 day courses run over a period of 10 weeks, so you take one class per week for the duration.

Classes are run either during the day or at night and you need to attend all 10 classes to successfully complete the course.  the course teaches things such as the history of tattooing, health and safety, drawing techniques, sterilization procedures, as well as how to use and assemble the relevant machinery.  The course begins teaching you how to use the machinery by tattooing oranges to get a feel for the equipment before moving on to skins and then in the final class doing a moderate sized tattoo on a willing volunteer.

The teaching staff at the academy are all experienced tattooists and people from the tattooing industry and have extensive contacts within the industry.  While the course won’t give you everything you need to become an experienced tattooist, experience being very important here, it will give you a beginning and a starting point for getting into the industry, it also comes highly recommended by those who have taken the course.

Hey, I’ve called the number you provided above to inquire about this 10 week course being offered, but it seems I can never get a hold of them over the phone and their website, after many attempts (on different computers) over the past week I cannot access due to their page not loading at all. I’m extremely keen on this course and I ask some help on your behalf if you could… Please and thanks!

I also did the course , it was fantastic for those who are looking for a starting point in the tattoo industry. The people who run it are very professional , informative and experienced. Although the course is based around the assumption that the student will have basic drawing skill at least, anyone who is worried about this aspect should still take it on as you’ll find by the end of the course your skills will have improved substantially and if you’re still worried the tutors will direct you to places where you can learn more as well as provide you with as much information/exercises to overcome this hurdle.
This also concentrates on some very important ohs theory and safety aspects of tattooing , I thought these subjects alone were worth every dollar for those venturing into this with a business outlook.
      Regards Jewel

  7. Well… Ok my opinion of the Australian tattoo academy, to be honest I found it a very challenging and full on course, and god thank it my money was well spent, I found my self in a class with like minded intelligent people with one goal in hand, IE: to gather the correct tools and practice techniques to forward my self into a field of my preference, I found it very insightful and on frequent Occasions very humorous, leave your baggage at the door.. Because if your offended by the instructors views on cretin topics and his sometimes uncouth way of letting you know were it lies, then you got to re think, Mitch has been around… And around…. And.. He knows his shit so take your seat belt off and strap your brain in for a supper cool course, and thank you Mitch for ALL the cool tech tips, and Albert too… Dats da truth, Jono thanks again. Killer course just wanna do it again

    • Thanks for the feedback Jono. Lots of people seem to have gotten a lot out of thier time at the tattoo academy which is great to hear

    November 7, 2012 at 12:30 am

    • Hi Styliana.

You’re probably better off directly contacting the academy to find out about this. They do run the course in different states so it might just be a case of waiting for them to have a course in Adelaide. They can be contacted by email them at: austattoo@live.com or call on: 0466 903 362

      Thanks for the comment

Hi, this is awesome, but how do you apply to these sort of courses, I am looking into trying to get a tattoo apprentship, where would be the best place to look for one ?!

    April 22, 2013 at 2:30 am

    • Bryce you will need to contact the Academy directly to apply for the courses.
If you are looking at getting into an actual apprenticeship I would start by going in to a few studios and talking to them about what you would need to do to become an apprentice. Make sure that you have a lot of work drawn up in your folio including lettering work and different styles. Keep drawing constantly.
Good luck with it and thanks for reading
